报告摘要:
Biofuels are renewable energy sources that can solve the increasing global energy demands, the dwindling supply of fossil fuels, and the increasing greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels. Ethanol is currently being used, in some countries, as a biofuel or as an additive to gasoline. It can be produced from a variety of feedstocks such as starches, sugars, or lignocellulosic materials (e.g., energy crops and agricultural residues). The objectives of this lecture are to: 1) introduce different generations of biofuels; 2) compare different platforms for ethanol production; 3) understand the challenges of ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials; 4) demonstrate the methodology of determining the theoretical yield of ethanol from different feedstocks; and 5) impart the status of lignocellulosic ethanol industry.
